Where Art, Aviation and History Take Flight

Artborne is a traveling educational exhibit created by D’ Art Studio that explores the history, creativity and human stories behind aircraft nose art.

Designed for museums, schools, aviation organizations, community programs and special events, Artborne offers an engaging way for people of all ages to experience the powerful connection between artistic expression and aviation history.

More Than an Aviation Exhibit

Artborne tells the stories of the artists, mechanics and crew members who transformed military aircraft into flying works of art.

Through painted names, characters, animals and meaningful symbols, crews gave their aircraft identities beyond their military numbers. The artwork expressed courage, humor, hope, memories of home and the bonds shared by those who served together.

Many of the people who created these images were never formally recognized. Artborne honors their creativity and preserves their place within aviation history.

Every aircraft had a number. Crews gave them a story.

Art and Aviation Go Hand in Hand

Aviation is shaped by science, engineering and skill—but it has also always been influenced by imagination, design and artistic expression.

Aircraft nose art demonstrates how creativity can appear in the most unexpected places. During difficult moments in history, art gave people a way to express their individuality, connect with one another and bring humanity to the machines around them.

Artborne helps visitors see aircraft differently—not only as machines, but also as canvases carrying memories, emotions and personal stories.

Presented at the New England Air Museum

Artborne was first introduced in partnership with the New England Air Museum during its World War II Weekend.

Surrounded by historic aircraft, visitors explored the history and meaning of nose art, participated in creative activities and discovered examples displayed throughout the museum.

The collaboration demonstrated how museums, nonprofit organizations and artists can work together to make history engaging, accessible and meaningful for new generations.
